In 2002, when celebrity icons like Beyoncé and Britney Spears reigned supreme, Sam's Hail Mary follows a 10-year-old girl at a historically Black Christian school who begins to question her self-worth when her light-skinned friend, Deja, is cast as “Mary” in the Nativity play. Convinced she is too dark and too disobedient for divine or social approval, Sam questions whether she is truly "made in God's image" and sets out to prove it, no matter the cost.
